Produce Case & Pallet Labeling Guidelines
Depending on whom you ask, nature’s candy can refer to any number of fruits and vegetables! One thing is certain, no matter your preference, everyone wants to ensure they are eating the freshest fruits and vegetables available. Of course a keen eye and great sense of smell help the consumer choose the produce that is right for them, however there are many guidelines and protocols to ensure that the transport, distribution and merchandising of said produce is as efficient and timely as possible.
We aim to dissect the labeling and marking information required on produce packaging so all potential providers and wholesalers ensure they are meeting the industry standards set forth by large retailers. As in past guidelines we will reference the protocols and requirements set forth by Walmart, one of the world’s largest retailers, to set the bar for labeling of produce cases and pallets. By following their rigid guidelines, potential suppliers will ensure all requirements are met or exceeded for almost all retailers.
Produce Case Label
The abbreviation PTI refers to the Produce Traceability Initiative. The PTI case label provides industry standard data to speed the inventory flow of highly perishable products though the supply chain. The information on the PTI must be both scannable and readable. Use of the PTI label replaces the requirement of general case markings.
You are required to use the GS1-128 barcode on the PTI label. If you are not able to supply the GS1-128 barcode, the GTIN in ITF-14 format is acceptable as long as the harvest date and grower lot numbers are printed on the label in a human readable format. Use of the PTI case label for items other than produce is allowed within the fresh produce department, but not recommended.
All produce shipments are required to have the following information:
- Packer Information
- Product Description
- New Weight
- Country of Origin
- GS1-128 barcode
- Voice Pick Code
- Harvest Date for Fresh Produce OR Sell By or Pack Date for pre-packed processed
- Item level UPC barcode for pre-pack items OR PLU number for bulk items
Produce shipments Optional information:
- Handling Instructions
- Additional Regulatory Information
For industry information and standards specifications such as label size and formatting, refer to www.gs1us.org and www.producetraceability.org.
Produce Pallet Label
The pallet label, along with the SSCC-18 barcode in GS1 format aids in a faster receiving process and better inventory management. The item GTIN in ITF-14 format is acceptable if you are not able to provide the SSCC-18 barcode. Pallet labels are required on two adjacent sides of the pallet. PTI labels are required to be outward facing on a minimum of 1 side when palletized.
All pallets are required to contain the following information on their labels:
- Ship from Address
- Ship to Address
- Facility / Location
- PO Number
- Dept Number
- SSCC-18 barcode in GS1-128 format
The following is optional information for produce pallet labels:
- Sequential Numbering of Pallets
- Expanded GLN Address
- Carrier Name
- BOL Number
- Pro Number
- Store Number
Please note that all pallet and shipping labels are required to use the GS1-128 barcode no later than 1/1/2023. ITF-14 format will no longer be accepted after this date.
Of course when it comes to perishable and delicate items like produce there is a bevy of protocols that must be followed for the packaging, transport and safe handling of said items. For comprehensive insight into these please consult your potential buyers and retailers.
