Walmart® Pallet Shipping Label Requirements
WALMART® PALLET SHIPPING LABELING REQUIREMENTS
For large retailers, pallets are the most commonly used portable platform for receiving and transporting quantities of goods. When a retail behemoth like Walmart sets or updates their standards for pallet labeling and marking, they often ripple forth as an industry standard. Automated Marking Inc. has outlined the most important practices for labeling, coding, and marking pallets to meet Walmart’s list of requirements.
Pallet Shipping Labels
A pallet label is required when shipping unitized items to Walmart Distribution and Fulfillment Centers. The SSCC-18 barcode is the required barcode format for all pallet labels. A Mixed Item pallet label is NOT ALLOWED to contain the GTIN in ITF-14 format.
- Pallet labels are required on at least 2 adjacent sides of the pallet, preferred on the upper right corner. It is best practice to place the label between layers of stretch wrap.
- The use of SSCC-18 barcode does not negate the requirement of the ITF-14 barcode at the case level.
Walmart also recommends that labels and pallet markings include the following information: Ship from address, ship to address, department number, Walmart item number, PO type, PO number , and the number of cases on pallet.
Please note that Walmart’s 2022 regulation updates state that all pallet labels are required to include the SSCC-18 barcode and must be in compliance no later than 1/1/2023.
*Specific networks may have additional pallet label requirements. Be sure to check with your network standards (e.g. DSDC, RX, etc.) for additional instruction.
Pallet Shipping Labels – Pallet Pull / PDQ
Pallet Pull & PDQ Display Pallet labels have all of the same labeling and marking requirements as standard pallets. The SSCC-18 barcode is the required barcode format for all pallet labels. In addition to the SSCC-18 barcode, the 14-digit case GTIN is required on the pallet label only when the item is a full Pallet Pull or PDQ Display.
Pallet Placards
A pallet that requires a placard will also be required to meet the pallet label requirements. A placard is not a substitute for the pallet label, however. The 14-digit case GTIN is required to appear on the pallet label only when the item is a full pallet pull or PDQ display.
Items that require a pallet placard include:
- PALLET PULL – A palletized item that is shipped to store where the entire pallet is considered one case.
- PDQ DISPLAY – A pre-assembled display ready for the store floor.
Placards must have bold lettering and be easy to identify as a pallet pull or PDQ display. These types of pallets are required to be labeled as shown below.
- Required pallet placard size: 8 1/2″ x 11″.
