Walmart®’s Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Packaging Sticker Marking Requirements

RFID Packaging Sticker Marking Requirements

Worker scanning a RFID tagRadio-frequency identification (RFID) uses electromagnetic fields to automatically identify and track tags attached to objects. These tags are an invaluable resource for retailers as they transmit digital data, such as inventory identification numbers, which can be used to track inventory in an incredibly effective manner.

Large retailers like Walmart rely on these RFID stickers to keep incredibly detailed information on their inventory throughout the shipping and distribution process as well as for inventory management purposes. These RFID stickers and their markings are every bit as important as basic packaging, shipping, and pallet labels.

Changes have been made to Walmart’s requirements for Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Packaging Stickers in 2022.

If you do not already have a scannable UPC barcode on the package, Walmart prefers to
use an EPC combo sticker. Walmart’s minimum requirements for private or proprietary brands are as follows (these requirements encompass all necessary information for National / Supplier brands as well):

  • Barcode/UPC #
  • EPC logo(place at bottom of UPC bars and scale to half of the bar height, minimum of 4.5 mm)
  • Item Description (from primary packaging)
  • Replenishment code
  • Season code
  • Dept/Sub/Fineline
  • Simplified color name
  • Style number/VSN number

Generic Embedded Stickers without Scannable UPC Codes

If you already have a scannable UPC barcode without an inlay, use a separate EPC sticker. These Electronic Product Codes (EPC) are a visible sign that a company is committed to consumer privacy guidelines and a means of reassurance for both retailers and consumers alike.

For stickers and labels without scannable UPC codes, a generic embedded paper-based sticker can be added to the interior side (non-printed side) of the packaging as long as the EPC logo is added to the visible area (printed side) of the packaging, in proximity of the UPC barcode.

All brands must show: UPC Number (no bars), EPC Logo, and the Item Description (from primary packaging).

***Any packaging that has an RFID tag is required to have the Electronic Product Code (EPC) symbol displayed on the packaging where customers and store associates can see it.

RFID packaging stickers are not a replacement for standard packaging labels nor shipping labels. For a comprehensive guide to Walmart’s regulations please visit our helpful blog posts covering these topics.

Pallet Labels and Placard still must meet all of Walmart’s marking, coding, and labeling requirements as well. We offer a helpful guide covering this topic as well.
